International Friendly: Iran defeats China 2-0

Afshin Ghotbi's Iran have scored a 2-0 away win over an rapidly improving China in an international friendly this evening.

Goals from Andranik Teymourian and Mohammad Gholami gave Team Meli a confidence boosting result ahead of the Asian Cup in Qatar in January, while it is a rare set-back for China head coach Gao Hongbo during what has been an otherwise productive 12 months.

With the match played on an uneven pitch Iran struck first through Teymourian, who finished off a swift counter-attack.

The Iranians moved the ball deep out of their own half too quickly for a back-tracking Chinese defence, with a rebound eventually arriving at the feet of Teymourian who slid the ball into what was a virtually empty net in the 38th minute of the match.

It was in the 58th minute that the Iranians made sure of the victory against a side who in their current form will be considering themselves an outside chance of winning the Asian Cup, Gholami scoring a superb goal on his debut.

The 27 year-old played an incisive one-two, beating a flat China back-line before entering the penalty, rounding the goalkeeper and managing to stay on his feet despite being clipped.

From there on in it was easy for the Steel Azin man as he rolled the ball home.
