Japan name Zaccheroni as new coach

Alberto Zaccheroni
Alberto Zaccheroni
Japan on Monday ended a two-month global hunt by naming Italian Alberto Zaccheroni as their new national coach following their best-ever World Cup on foreign soil.

The former AC Milan and Juventus coach will be officially unveiled on Tuesday.

"The national coach has been finally decided," Japan Football Association (JFA) vice-president Kuniya Daini told reporters as he announced the appointment without giving details, including the length of the contract.

The association said it would hold a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday with the 57-year-old Zaccheroni, the sixth foreigner and first Italian to manage Japan, the three-time Asian champions.

Zaccheroni, who won the 1998-99 Serie A title with AC Milan, replaces Takeshi Okada, who guided the Samurai Blue to the World Cup last-16 in South Africa but left after the tournament.

Three foreigners - Philippe Troussier, Zico and Ivica Osim - have coached Japan after Okada led Japan to a winless World Cup debut in 1998 in his first stint as national coach.

Unable to obtain a work visa in time, Zaccheroni is expected to watch from the stands for Japan's first post-World Cup international match -- against Paraguay in Yokohama on Saturday.

It was Paraguay who sent Japan packing from South Africa after a penalty shoot-out on June 30. They face Guatemala in another home friendly in Osaka three days later.

Zaccheroni, famous for his attacking style with three forwards, has been coaching Italian sides since the age of 30 and took over struggling Juventus last January on a four-month contract. The Turin side finished the season seventh.

The Italian's first major task will be the AFC Asian Cup in January in Qatar in which Japan hope to regain the title.

But Al Shamrani scored his second goal of the night in the third minute of stoppage time from the spot.

In Tuesday's other game Al Hazm played out a 2-2 draw with Al Qadisiya. Al Hazm took the lead after 10 minutes through Dhiyab Majrashi before Al Qadisiya's Nigerian striker Jhon Jambo equalised on 32 minutes and then gave his side the lead on 57 minutes. Jeonbuk Motors coach Choi Kang-hee hailed his team's ACL chances after a 1-0 K-League win without star man Lee Dong-guk.
Jeonbuk, who won the 2006 AFC Champions League are set to face Saudi Arabian giants Al Shabab in the quarter-finals of this year's competition, with the first leg in South Korea on the 15th of September.

"Our key player Lee Dong-guk was suspended for the match but still the players showed enough passion to win," Choi told the-afc.com.
"I think the victory will help boost the confidence of my players for the AFC Champions League."
With Lee missing it was up to foreign import Enio to open the scoring for Jeonbuk, with the Brazilian finding the net in the 27th minute. The Greens held on to their lead for the remainder of the match, with FC Seoul having Uzbek Server Djeparov sent off as they searched for an equalizer.
The victory means Jeonbuk stay second in the standings, two points behind leaders Jeju United and Choi has stated the importance of the win as they continue the search for a second K-League title.
"I expected a tough match and told the players to play like it's the final of a competition," he said.
Lee Dong-guk, who had a spell in England with Middlesbrough, has scored 5 goals in 9 appearances this season and should return for the next game against Gyeongnam.

The match finished 1-1 at the end of regulation time, before China prevailed in the penalty shootout by a 4-3 margin.

Despite the defeat, the Lions had a competent outing considering they were unable to field a full-strength side, with Lionel Lewis, Fahrudin Mustafic, Shi Jiayi and team captain Indra Sahdan Daud among the most notable absentees.

FIFA 2010 South Africa: Best Goals

Bangladesh clinch first position in SA games

Bangladesh national team
Bangladesh clinched the coveted football gold medal of the SA Games after long 11 years with a facile 4-0 victory over Afghanistan in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday. Atiqur Rahman Mishu, Enamul Huq, Abdul Baten Komol and Towhidul Alam Sabuj scored the goals for the champions who dominated whole 90 minutes of the final and presented the hosts with the 18th gold medal of the meet. Bangladesh footballers produced excellent teamwork and maintained the same rhythm throughout the game. Afghanistan had very little space to show their abilities and their in-form forward Belal Arezou, who scored nine goals in the tournament, failed to inspire his team.
Bangladesh went in front in the 18th minute through midfielder Mishu. Defender Nasir produced another of his dazzling footwork to dribble past two Afghan defenders and finding no way to halt Nasir an Afghan defender brought him down just outside the penalty box. Waly Faisal curled the resulting free-kick and Mishu headed the ball into the right hand post of Afghan keeper Bashir Ahmad.
Bangladesh continued to probe the opposition defence. Forward Enamul’s a fierce side-volley from the middle of the box in the 24th minute whistled past the side post.
The thirst for the title kept the Bangladesh players on their toes and they doubled the lead in the 33rd minute. Left-winger Shakil controlled an Enamul cross and gave a neat cross for Enamul to head it home.
